How to Ask a Japanese Camera Shop for a Quote
The first message decides whether you get a price, a photo set, or silence. Here are three templates that work, in Japanese.
Last verified: 2026-10-28.
Japanese used-camera shops answer specific questions well. What they do not do is interpret a vague request. "Do you have a good Nikon F3?" gets you a catalogue link; "Nikon F3 HP, body only, grade AB or better, budget ¥60,000, shipping to Germany, do you have one and can you send photos of the prism?" gets you a quote.
The templates below are written to be pasted into a contact form, an email, or WhatsApp.
What to include in every request
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Model + exact variant | F3 vs F3 HP, Summicron 35mm v3 vs v4, OM-1 vs OM-1n. Variants price differently |
| Condition target | Their grade name, plus what you will accept (e.g. "AB or better, no fungus") |
| Quantity | One item and ten items are different conversations |
| Destination country | Determines shipping method and whether they will deal at all |
| Budget | Shops can meet a price if they know it; without it they quote list price |
| Deadline | Optional, but it moves you up the queue if genuine |

Reading the reply
- Photos of the actual item, with the fault visible → the shop is serious.
- Grade name only, no comment → ask specifically about fungus, haze, shutter, and battery corrosion before you commit. Use the fault glossary for the terms.
- "We do not ship overseas" → do not push. See the shipping article for what that means for proxies.
- No invoice, payment only to a personal account → walk away.
A note on grades in the reply
Shops will quote you a grade in their own scale. Before you compare two quotes, check what that grade means at that shop — the same letter does not mean the same condition. Our grades comparison maps four of the major scales side by side.

Wording follows the terms and grade vocabularies published by the shops compared on this site. See the grades, faults, shipping and warranty pages for the underlying sources.
Templates are suggestions, not scripts. Adjust the grade names and budget to the shop you are writing to.
