Reading a Japanese Listing: The Commercial Terms

Optical faults are one vocabulary. Money, accessories and returns are another. These are the words that decide whether a listing is worth opening.

The fault glossary covers what is wrong with the glass. This page covers everything else on a Japanese listing: what you are buying, what comes with it, and what happens if it is broken when it arrives.

Condition words that are not grades

TermLiteralWhat it means in practice
現状品 (genjōhin)"as-is item"Sold in its current state. At Fujiya this is a specific grade, outside the used warranty, for items with a partial fault
訳あり (wakeari)"with circumstances"A known defect is being disclosed. At RE Camera this is grade E, and the item may still work depending on your use
難あり (nan'ari)"has difficulty"A defect exists. At Kitamura this is grade C — the tier just above junk
ジャンク (janku) / ジャンク扱いjunk / "treated as junk"Not guaranteed to work. No returns. See the junk guide
動作未確認 (dōsa mikakunin)"operation unconfirmed"The seller has not tested it. Treat as junk with unknown faults
通電のみ確認 (tsūden nomi kakunin)"power-on confirmed only"It switches on. Nothing else is claimed
部品取り (buhin-dori)"for parts"The eBay-style label for junk. Bought as a donor
コレクションcollectionFujiya's lowest grade: barely functional, for display or parts

Accessories and completeness

TermMeaning
付属品 (fuzokuhin)Included accessories — check the list against the photos
元箱 (motobako)Original box. Adds value on collector models
説明書 (setsumeisho)Manual
保証書 (hoshōsho)Warranty card. For used items this is the shop's own card, not the manufacturer's
欠品 (keppin)Missing part. Usually followed by what is missing
No original box — the most common deduction on a collector price

At Map Camera, every accessory is itemised per listing, and the shop states that battery degradation is either noted or the battery is replaced before sale. On a body sold without a battery, budget for one.

Money and payment

TermMeaning
Tax included / tax excluded. Used prices are usually shown 税込 in retail, 税別 in wholesale
送料 (sōryō)Shipping. Often 全国一律 (flat rate nationwide) — but "nationwide" means Japan
代引き (daibiki)Cash on delivery. Domestic only
振込 (furikomi)Bank transfer
領収書 (ryōshūsho)Receipt. At Map Camera, a bank transfer receipt or card statement serves as one unless you ask
If this word is absent from the page, assume it is not offered — see who ships

Returns and defects

TermMeaning
返品不可 (henpin fuka)No returns. Standard for junk
初期不良 (shoki furyō)Dead on arrival — usually the only guaranteed remedy on used goods
中古保証 (chūko hoshō)The shop's used warranty. Period and exclusions vary — see the warranty comparison
現状渡し (genjō watashi)Handed over as-is, no warranty implied

Fujiya and RE Camera both exclude their lowest grades (現状品 / コレクション and J) from warranty. Kitamura excludes items under ¥10,000. None of that appears in the grade letter alone.

Three phrases that change the price most

On collector models this is worth a visible premium and is the easiest thing to verify in photos.
The price drops because the risk moved to you; it is not a discount, it is a transfer.
Combined with ジャンク, this is the combination that produces the cheapest listings and the most disappointment.

A five-line pre-purchase scan

1. Grade → which shop's scale, and what does that grade mean there?
5. Shipping → 海外発送 present on the page, or domestic only?
